About

Sophie Watson is a Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland based illustrator, art tutor and mother.

She is drawn to the warmth, softness and personality of the hand drawn line and when not working in analogue fashion (in favourite mediums pencil, ink, gouache or linocut) attempts to emulate these qualities digitally.
A restless experimenter by nature, her varied interests feed into a diverse practice which spans painting, drawing, printmaking, paper craft, collage, 3-D works, textile art and making zines. These disparate mediums are united through a characteristic wonky charm, deft touch and wry sense of humour.

Her zines have won ‘Best of the Fest’ awards at the Auckland Zinefest and her comics were featured in Three Words: An Anthology of Aotearoa/NZ Women’s Comics. Her work has featured in The Spinoff, Metro, Cuisine Magazine and she has created book illustrations for Huia Publishers and Allen & Unwin. She also tutors at the Owairaka Community Club, a social and creative space for people with lived experience of mental health issues/tangata whai i te ora.
